The entire cat-loving community is in the middle of celebrating National Cat Lovers’ Month. Everyone who has ever loved a cat needs to get involved. There are some really wonderful and fun feline-focused activities you can participate in to help cats in need.
North Shore Animal League America’s Rescue Team revved up their lifesaving efforts for December with more than 300 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens arriving at our Port Washington, NY campus this month. The homeless animals were welcomed from six different states and one US territory: Georgia, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico. Among these new Mutt-i-grees is a nursing mom and her 8 puppies who arrived from Hub City Humane Society in Mississippi.
Happiness for Star, a Terrier mix, is the company of people and playing ball. Whenever she has both, her tail wags nonstop and she has a “happy” smile. Star, hardly more than a baby herself, arrived on a rescue transport from Mississippi, with 11 four-week-old puppies. This sweet family was found abandoned in a field in Alabama and Star had single-handedly managed to care for all 11 babies. It was amazing that they all survived. Now that Star’s puppies have been adopted, it’s time for her to shine and find a loving home of her own.
At just 12-weeks-old, Nubia was surrendered to the overcrowded Animal Care Centers (ACC) in New York City. It was clear she could not bear weight on her right leg. The staff at ACC immediately put out a plea for another shelter to take her in, with the hope they could somehow help this beautiful girl.
On the evening of October 30th, North Shore Animal League America hosted a special celebration for the completion of the Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center, our new cage-free facility for kittens and cats. Beth and Howard Stern, Billy Joel, and Rachael Ray were among the many honored guests in attendance to see this new addition to our shelter that was years in the making.
It’s here! BFF! Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center is officially open! Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters who made this happen. We couldn’t have accomplished this without you! The ribbon-cutting ceremony for BFF was a magical evening for me. BFF is more than a building to me; it represents a leap forward in feline wellness and adoption. The felines we rescue will be much calmer and confident in these beautiful, sunny, spacious cage-free surroundings.
I had a sad month! My beloved feral cat, Muffin, recently passed away. I was heartbroken and truly devastated. It’s amazing how a bond can form between a human and an animal that doesn’t even want to be touched. I fed her every day, 2x/ day for 11 years and bought her heated kitty houses that were placed all over our property. Every day she hissed at me but I knew she loved me, and in a strange way I equated that hiss to a “thank you!” On the day she came very close to me and didn’t hiss, I knew something was terribly wrong.
North Shore Animal League America partnered, for the first time, with K9 Global Rescue to bring four dogs, rescued from a South Korean dog meat farm, to a new life in the United States where they will now become treasured pets. After more than 20 hours traveling by land and air, the dogs arrived at the airport and were met by our Rescue Team who then shepherded them through U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and brought them safely to our Port Washington, NY campus.
North Shore Animal League America recently welcomed 36 dogs and puppies on a rescue transport from our newest shelter partner, Hub City Humane Society in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Among the weary travelers was Star, a new mama who was found as a stray in a field with her 11 newborn puppies.
