Moving from Mississippi to a Better Life

North Shore Animal League America recently welcomed 36 dogs and puppies on a rescue transport from one of our newest shelter partners, Hub City Humane Society in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Among the weary travelers was Star, a new mama who was found as a stray in a field with her 11 newborn puppies. This new family would have died in an overcrowded shelter in Mobile, Alabama, if they hadn’t been rescued. That’s the sad reality.

By taking these animals, Animal League America gives Hub City the space it needs so it can save more homeless pets from surrounding shelters in both Mississippi and Alabama. The President of Hub City, Dr. Brenda Sumrall is a local veterinarian and when they rescue animals from overcrowded shelters they put them into foster care homes, including her own.

The Rescue Team took great care to unload Star and her four-week-old pups first and get them settled from their journey before their initial veterinary exam.

Please support our rescue efforts and help give more homeless animals the chance to be the beloved companion animals they were always meant to be.

“The overcrowded shelter in Alabama would have euthanized Star and her pups quickly,” said Karla Agostinello, Rescue Manager at Animal League America. “Star is a great mom, always caring for her babies. She would take a break to sit in my lap, but she’d make sure to go back and check on her puppies.”

Star and her pups are now being cared for in the Nursery of our Pet Health Centers. Here they will get all the nurturing that they need to thrive and grow. All of these dogs and puppies, our newest Mutt-i-grees, will receive the finest care and compassion available until they are ready for the next part of their journey – being adopted into loving, responsible homes.
