It’s that time of year again; kitten season. The time of year when unspayed cats give birth, flooding animal shelters and rescue groups across the nation with homeless litters with no place to call home. Millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States because there simply are not enough homes for them all.
As the kitten population is about to skyrocket into the thousands during the warmer weather months, North Shore Animal League America teamed up with one of our rescue partners in Florida to combat this ever-growing issue head on. We recently sent two of our state-of-the-art Mobile Rescue Units down to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach, FL to help create space in their facility and provide a better chance for 68 innocent cats and kittens to find responsible, loving homes. The 2,500-mile round-trip journey was capped off when the units, carrying the homeless felines, arrived back at our Port Washington, N.Y. campus. When they arrived, the lucky felines were greeted with open arms by members of our rescue team as well as several of our volunteers.
“The colder weather has lasted longer here in New York and other areas in the northeast this year, so kitten season hasn’t started up as quickly as it usually does here. Because of that, it’s given us more of an opportunity to help our shelter partners down South like Peggy Adams, who have extended kitten seasons due to the warm temperatures all year round,” said Animal League America Senior Manager of Rescue Services Cindy Szczudlo. “We realize there’s an overpopulation problem and if we can help ease that just a little by helping with a rescue then we’re going to do it. Anything we can do alleviate the problem and provide better lives for these animals.”
Now safe and sound in the care of the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization these cats and kittens will receive the best medical care from our veterinary team before eventually being placed up for adoption. Although the overpopulation of homeless animals is a major problem in the country and around the world, it’s also an opportune time to visit Animal League America’s Adoption Center or your local shelter to provide a safe haven for these deserving, homeless animals.
