June got off to a super busy start for our Rescue Team at North Shore Animal League America with dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens arriving by both air and land.
On a sunny afternoon the plane touched down safely at Republic Airport on Long Island with 25 puppies and 5 medium-sized dogs from the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA in Virginia. This rescue was facilitated by the Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team (PAART) with their new Mahindra Airvan GA8, generously donated by The Rachael Ray Foundation.
“Transporting the puppies from Martinsville to our Port Washington, New York campus is usually a 10-hour ride with no traffic,” says Karla Agostinello, Rescue Coordinator. “By air, the travel time is only two hours, so the stress for the animals is a lot less. This was our second transport by air with Martinsville and PAART.”
The next two rescues arrived via our climate-controlled Mobile Rescue & Adoption Units. A vital part of our rescue mission, these rescue units are equipped with everything the animals need during their journey. Fifteen puppies, 13 small dogs, and two medium-sized dogs were picked up from Rescue Dog in Tennessee and arrived safely on our campus. Upon arrival, all the animals are given water and food and bedded down for the night so they can relax before being seen by the veterinarians the next day.
Our Rescue Team was then off to North Carolina to pick up 25 puppies, 10 kittens, and five cats from several rescue groups there. The kittens came from a new partner in rescue, the Gaston County Animal Control and Enforcement. The group reached out to our Rescue Team for help because they are being forced to euthanize kittens due to overpopulation in the shelter. Thankfully, these lives have been saved, but there are others out there that need help.
