10 Steps of Hope

To give you an idea of how the Circle of Hope members are helping us, we created the 10 Steps of Hope, which highlights many of the activities that are making a big difference in the lives of homeless animals.

The thousands of animals that we rescue each year come into our care in a variety of ways. Our Humane Relocation Program saves numerous pets from states where municipal shelters are overflowing and euthanasia is widespread. We also rescue pets impacted by natural disasters and other emergencies, and we conduct regular rescues to save puppies and dogs from puppy mills.

Behavioral Assessment/Training – Each animal is given a Behavioral Assessment to determine any existing issues, and our trainers address any problems before the pet becomes available for adoption.

A full Medical Evaluation is performed on each animal to provide any necessary treatment.

Each dog, cat, puppy and kitten receives all the necessary vaccinations. In a single year, our medical staff performs over 65,000 vaccinations.

North Shore Animal League America understands the vital importance of spay/neuter in helping to end euthanasia and work toward a no-kill nation. In 2018, we performed over 5,550 spay/neuter procedures and provided over 15,000 low-cost spay/neuter referrals through our SpayUSA® program.

A bath and grooming help each animal put their best paw forward on the adoption floor.

Our Adoption Center is open 365 days a year and houses an average of 350 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Forty-two indoor dog runs surround a bright and spacious atrium where potential adopters can become acquainted with possible new family members.

Through our Cooperative Adoption Program, we work in partnership with rescue organizations and shelters to save animals from their shelters. Using our Mobile Adoption Units, we host adoption events at high-traffic locations to raise visibility of our shelter and rescue partners and increase adoptions.

Our adoption screening process is designed to ensure that each animal is placed with a responsible person prepared to make a life-long commitment. An important part of the process is to match the lifestyle and needs of the adopter with the individual dog or cat. To ensure successful, caring adoptions, an application must be completed and references provided. Each application is carefully screened by our Adoption Counselors.

Nothing is more exciting than the moment an animal leaves Animal League America to begin its new life with a loving family. Our work isn’t over though. Post-adoption quality control follow-ups ensure that pets are in caring homes.
