One of my roommates is giving melatonin to my other roommate's cat without her knowledge or permission. It is only a kitten and just meows a lot. I have never heard of giving an animal melatonin, but I would be extremely upset if someone was giving my cat pills behind my back, regardless. Is there any legal action that can be taken?
Cruelty to animals is against the law. Medications or supplements should not be given without first consulting with a veterinarian. However, failure to consult with a veterinarian, while irresponsible, may not rise to the level of cruelty, depending on what is given to an animal. Consider telling the cat’s “parent” so she knows what is going on and can take steps to ensure the well-being of her cat. I suggest the kitten be seen by a veterinarian.
