How can I legally keep the dog my friend gave me seven weeks ago?

A friend of mine asked if I wanted his dog. I said yes and have had him for about 7 weeks. I have had him registered and took him to the vet to get him update on shots and what not. Now he is saying he wants him back. I do not want to give him back. What legally do I have/need to do?

Generally when a person gives his/her dog away, such person has no further rights to the dog. The new “owner” is typically in a solid position to keep the dog without taking any further action (other than caring for the dog, but certainly getting a dog licensed, microchipped, and to a veterinarian can help if a lawsuit for the return of the dog is commenced). If any legal action is taken (and often pet custody disputes do not end up in court), it is typically initiated by the person not in possession of the animal. The court would review the evidence to determine the rights of the parties. For example, if one party argued a dog was boarded and not given away, a court might want to see evidence of a boarding agreement and evidence of money exchanged for boarding. Good luck!
