Can I be forced to neuter my dog in California?

Question

I live in kings county California and am being forced to neuter my 5-year-old dog. I do not want to. Is there any legal way to avoid it?

Answer

The published spay/neuter law for Kings County, CA that I was able to locate provides, in part, that no person shall own or harbor an unaltered dog or cat over four months of age unless the owner obtains an unaltered dog license which may be issued if the dog is a competition dog, a service or military dog, or if spaying/neutering would likely cause “serious bodily harm or death due to age, infirmity, or a medical condition.” Verification must be provided by a licensed veterinarian. Local spay/neuter laws differ throughout the country. Changes to these laws are not always promptly updated online so I suggest that you consult with a town attorney who can let you know whether there have been any updates to the local law. Consider that spaying/neutering help to reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats and provide health benefits.
