Ex surrendered my dog without permission

Question

The day after the breakup I went to work and my Ex was at my place taking her stuff. When i returned my dog was missing. She informed me that she took the dog to the local shelter and surrendered her. I never was able to locate my dog. Am I able to press charges on my ex?

Answer

People who believe their animal was stolen can contact the police. The police will likely want proof of “ownership” of the animal. The police enforce laws relating to theft (but they often don’t get involved in pet custody disputes when people lived together with an animal or otherwise “shared” an animal). People can also commence a civil lawsuit for money damages and the return of their stolen animal (although getting the animal returned is likely to be difficult if your ex does not have the animal).
