Question
A local rescue has fixed my dog before giving it back to me, without my consent. Is it illegal for a rescue to do this when they know the dog has an owner already?
Answer
Some localities have laws that require shelters to spay/neuter dogs and cats before they are returned to their “owners” and/or require dogs and cats in the locality to be spayed/neutered. These laws contain limited exceptions, such as illness that would jeopardize the animal’s health. The purpose of these laws is to reduce overpopulation. Check with your locality to get a copy of your local law.
